All carvings are made of locally and sustainably sourced hardwoods from A. Johnson Co. in nearby Bristol, VT. We primarily carve maple and cherry, and typically frame with walnut. If you would like a specific hardwood, please include your preferences in our custom form.

All products are made 100% in Middlebury, VT.

Yes! We have access to data from everywhere in the world, and even the moon!

Every carving takes a different amount of time to carve. Smaller carvings can be 30 minutes to an hour, and larger carvings are sometimes cut overnight or for multiple days in a row. Prior to carving, wood is artistically laminated into layers and sets overnight before being cut to size. After carving, each model is hand-sanded and hand-finished with a protective linseed treatment that dries overnight. Water features are depicted with an epoxy that sets overnight.

Treeline Terrains’ first sale was in the spring of 2021, but the company was born from a project originating in 2019, when the first ski mountain was carved. We originally carved the Middlebury College Snow Bowl for the wonderful staff at the Bowl.

Water is depicted with a two-part epoxy dyed blue. We add makeup-quality dye to the epoxy mixture, fill the water feature, and then let the glue harden overnight.

CNC routers (computer numeric coding) are responsible for the bulk of carving. Following our coding, a computerized drill bit goes back and forth to carve each landscape. Each topography is then hand-sanded and hand-finished with a protective linseed treatment.

All of our frames are designed to “float” around the map. As the seasons change, wood naturally bends to avoid cracking. By creating a floating frame, each map can move throughout the seasons without pushing the frame. You might see a little divet in between your map and the frame during the cooler months – and that’s part of the innovation of our maps!

Our Process / Our Story

3D wood maps are created for any landscape, in any size. Proprietary mapping techniques allow us to carve your map with the highest accuracy, using ultra high-resolution satellite data. Our software generates a 3D file of your landscape and writes a toolpath containing millions of lines of positioning code, destined for CNC routers.
